A GM and an author are quite similar in the group Matthew D. Brown (Author): 7 years, 3 months ago
When you think about it, a GM and an author are quite similar. Both are telling a story. The only difference is the medium and the audience.
Of the two, running a game as a GM might be the harder option. As a […]

Assuming, of course, that you not playing a game that expects TPKs, y […]

Matthew Brown replied to the topic How did you develop the idea for your current work in progress? in the forum General Chat 7 years, 3 months ago
I’m currently working on a comedy sci-fi set in space.
The idea started as a three-page description of all the ways the squad of unit Treble-Six were useless. Beta readings saw people laughing several times a page but I was stuck on developing it. So it sat and gathered dust for a year or so.
Then one day a friend and I binge watched a lot…Read more

Matthew Brown replied to the topic What pages does a good author blog need in the forum General Chat 7 years, 3 months ago
The answer is “it depends”.
I would strongly suggest that an about the author page is vital and I would agree some form of contact page is a good idea.
Other than that you might want to think about how you present your books. The two options that most people seem to go for are a post category or a page per book (for SEO). That said, many a…Read more

Matthew Brown replied to the topic How do you make an out of character moment believable? in the forum Aspiring Authors 7 years, 3 months ago
I’ve recently written a post for Thanet Creative which dives into the issue of extreme right turns for characters and the whole scene and scene sequel cycle. If you need more help, this might be of use.

Matthew Brown replied to the topic How do you overcome writer's block? in the forum Aspiring Authors 7 years, 3 months ago
It depends on why you feel blocked. There is no consensus on a single way to overcome writer’s block but I did dive into the topic for a Thanet Creative post recently.

Why would you advise people to cause a TPK? in the forum TPK – Roleplay encounters and advice 7 years, 3 months ago
I’m sorry you lost a much-loved character, but that sounds like a poor GM combined with some bad teamwork. Come on, everyone knows that you protect your healer while trying to take down the other group’s healer. Why were your tanks and DPS characters not shielding your cleric?
A GM should not be happy that the players failed. That’s just mean.…Read more

Any advice for a first time GM? in the forum TPK – Roleplay encounters and advice 7 years, 3 months ago
I’m really looking forward to it. Being the GM looks like fun.
I’m not naive enough to think it will be easy but I want to have a go. I’m going to be running Hell’s Rebels (Pathfinder) which I’ve had in my library for ages.
I like Matt’s idea of getting another GM to support me. I’m going to ask the guy whose flat we play in. He’s been our GM…Read more

I’m sorry that you had a bad TPK.

Our TPK is about the most traumatic ending to a story I have ever experienced.
I had just got my beloved cleric – Cedric the Green – to level 8. We were in the middle of a side-quest to solve a murder when the local thieves guild caught wind of what we were up to and ambushed us. Our GM, Dave, had the mooks target Cedric first. After he went…Read more

Any advice for a first time GM? in the forum TPK – Roleplay encounters and advice 7 years, 3 months ago
My advice: Don’t!
I ran a game once and it was the hardest thing I ever did. I stick to just running a single character now.

Any advice for a first time GM? in the forum TPK – Roleplay encounters and advice 7 years, 3 months ago
If you are unsure I would suggest two things.
- Run a pre-made adventure path.
- Ask the most experienced GM from the group to support you.
When I ran my first game I had the groups founding GM backing me up. That really helped me find my feet. Not to mention I had a guide to some of the parts of the GM role that I was unfamiliar with.

In a few months time, I will be the GM for our group. There are four of us and we take it in turns but this is my first time in the hot-seat.
Any advice you can give me?
