Platform Building: Build an ideal reader profile

Get yourself a stronger sense of the reader you are targeting by working out the details of who this (fictional) person is. Do this like you would develop a character. This person you just made up should typify your ideal reader. Now you know them, you can tailor your platform building to them.

Example questions

  • How old are they?
  • Are they men, women or a little of both (in which case you need at least two profiles)
  • How do they identify (you might need more profiles)
  • Do they work?
  • What social and economic bracket are they in?
  • Which TV shows might they watch?
  • Which other authors do they love?
  • Do they have well-defined hopes and dreams?
  • Are they a homeowner?
  • Where do they turn for advice?

With some demographic information to hand, you should look at our social media review and work out which social media platform would be best to connect with your ideal reader.
