Salman Rushdie warns free expression is under threat


BBC News is reporting that Rushdie, famous for his book The Satanic Verses, has warned that free expression is under threat. He delivered his remarks in a video address at the British Book Awards.

Nine months after he was was stabbed on stage, acclaimed author Salman Rushdie in a rare public address has warned that freedom of expression in the West is under threat.

Rushdie addressed the recent spate of book bannings and unusual censorship in America calling the situation remarkably alarming.

“Now I am sitting here in the US, I have to look at the extraordinary attack on libraries, and books for children in schools. The attack on the idea of libraries themselves. It is quite remarkably alarming, and we need to be very aware of it, and to fight against it very hard.”
