Titles and headlines should inspire interest in your desired readers. If your ideal reader is more likely to read an article with a “workmanlike” title, then that is the right type for you.
Newspapers *and certain types of websites) try to maximise curiosity to get clicks. That’s where the click-hungry headlines – that are almost a meme at this point – come from. You know the ones, “Twenty things that can get you arrested, you’ll never believe number 18” and the like.
For some readers, those headlines begging for maximum clicks are off-putting and can be seen as inauthentic.
You could experiment with different types of headlines but don’t confuse increased clicks with increased readers. Clicks that do not become readers, subscribers, or fans are worth nothing.
