I’ve revisited the spam issue and was able to cleanly remove (and block) a lot of spam.
I am fairly confident this will not cause problems for legitimate users.

It is not you. They register and then post spammy topics in the forums. You never see that bit because the spam filter locks it away before it ever gets published.
