During the spell Roderick Burgess says “Oh my lord.” Is that one of the reasons they got Dream instead of Death? If he had said, “Oh my lady.” Would he have gotten Death or even Despair instead? No, they got Morpheus because he was exhausted beyond all reckoning after the events of Sandman Overture. It was like catching a lion in a mousetrap.
