I’ve been reading up on blogging. There seems to be quite a lot of opinion about just how often is the right amount for a blog. No one talks about the right amount for a new blog nor when you should consider your blog “no longer new”

How often should I publish for a new blog?

The answer depends on two factors:

      1. Your audience’s needs
      2. Your ability to keep up with the schedule

If the most you can reasonably keep up with is one post a week, then once a week is what is best for your blog. A fast-paced schedule (like, say, twice a day) is going to do you no good if your quality suffers as a result.

For a new blog, I would always suggest snapping out three or more good posts before you tell anyone about it. That way there is more than the post they came to see for them to read.

How do you know what your audience needs are?

(Sorry to reanimate a dead thread)

Although this sounds like a chicken or the egg situation, you are actually the one who resides – sort of.

If you can create a clear idea of the type of person you want to reach, you can begin to build a profile. Start with, “The kind of person that I want to reach has the following problems they want to solve or needs as yet unmet.” Then imagine/guess. Write for that profile person or persons and you will attract those with the problems or needs you will address.

Things that your audience might want can include

        • How to do something
        • Finding new books of type X, Y, or Z.
        • connecting with like-minded people
        • discovering new authors
        • How to change something

The possible list is endless. But it mostly just starts with you saying “my new readers will be people interested in _____” and then writing for that class of person.

How do people blog daily and still find time to write?

Like most things, it comes down to practice.

If you are new to blogging, aim for something you know that you can manage and slowly ramp it up as you get better at it.

The only exception to this is when starting a new blog. Write four or more great posts that go live the moment the site is opened. Otherwise, you are launching the site naked. Make sure there are more posts to read if the first one was enjoyable.
