How do flood defences work?
Just another idea for you.

Are you saying that ideas cannot be stolen or are you saying that when they are “stolen” they change and become something else? I’m confused. I really don’t want to do years and years of work only to have some thief take all the credit. It happens in Hollywood all the time.

Jason Latnar replied to the topic What do you blog about? in the forum General Chat 6 years, 1 month ago
I had not thought about it that way. Sorry, I know this topic is from last year but I guess I must have missed it the first time round.
Is there other stuff writers could blog about that would help sell books? I might start to blog if there are…..

From what I have been told stuff like satire is a safe harbour. It means that you can use satire as a defence in IP law cases. Does that help?

Matthew Brown started the topic How would you feel about a little gamification here? in the forum General Chat 6 years, 1 month ago
I’ve been working on gamification for another WordPress site which provides users with points and badges that they can earn by participating. The software that I used would allow for using your points to “buy” services and unlock parts of a site. I did not use the “buy” part and I am not sure it is necessarily the right choice for Author Buzz but…Read more

In discussions and forums, I have noticed that many people carry a low opinion of self-publishing authors. Why is that?
I am not suggesting that there are not some terrible self-published books out there. […]

Group extras has multiple bugs in the forum Help and Support 6 years, 1 month ago
I have taken a look into this. Yes, you are right. The plugin does not appear to be actively maintained. I think it would be safer to remove it and find another way to give you these features.
Leave it with me.

I cannot update the settings (show/hide, name, etc..).
The “all pages” link shows all pages on the site even the spammy ones that were removed.
I hope that I didn’t break anything.

Matthew Brown replied to the topic How soon should I give a character backstory? in the forum Aspiring Authors 6 years, 1 month ago
I’ve not read any of your work but surely putting all the backstory into chapter one is front heavy? Do you not find that the backstory slows down the pace of the chapter?
I know that if I did that, nothing would happen in chapter one. It would be bogged down in info dumps. I’m not saying yours is, maybe you have a gift for getting it all in…Read more

Let me see if I got this right. You step the reader through the characters thought process so that the OOCM seems rational.
Is that right?
Basically, yes.

Matthew Brown replied to the topic How do you stop people stealing your ideas? in the forum Aspiring Authors 6 years, 1 month ago
There are only a small number of actual plots available. Let’s say you had the idea to write a story about a child that goes to a magic school. Is that Harry Potter, The Worst Witch, The Books of Magic, The Magicians… The way you unfold your idea is what makes it yours. Even if 100 people said, “I like your idea, I’m going to use it”, they would…Read more

There is no “must” in writing and publishing. Some things are a good idea though.
