I’m not saying it don’t work but so much of Tumblr is hidden behind the firewall of login, that you can be working a long time to see any sign of Google rating links from there.
Tumblr is probably good for reaching people just not by SEO.

I would recommend that at the very least you talk about topics that relate to your major themes.
I would say this is probably the core approach.
