Blog: Hi Neil! After watching David and Michael bicker about billing order in Staged, I was wondering how you and Terry Pratchett decided who would be listed first on the cover of Good Omens? Was it just alphabetical? Thanks! from Neil Gaiman in the group Fans of Neil Gaiman 2 years, 8 months ago
No, it was coldly commercial. Terry sold more books than I did in the UK and the Commonwealth, so his name went first, I sold more in the US so my name went […]

Blog: Hello Mr. Gaiman! I’ve always loved the little jokes in Good Omens, but my favorite, by a long shot, is Anathema’s name. I like looking up the definitions of names and the two definitions of anathema I found are “a person cursed or excommunicated by and ecclesiastical authority” and “something someone vehemently dislikes”. Her name literally means “something the church is REALLY going to hate and the rest of you won’t be too thrilled either.” So my question is: Was there another name in the running or was that clearly the only choice? And were there some other little jokes that didn’t make it into the book or the series? from Neil Gaiman in the group Fans of Neil Gaiman 2 years, 8 months ago
The only names we talked about were Anathema and Anaesthesia, and I wound up using the latter in Neverwhere. I’m sure there are lots of small jokes if you look for them.
