Most of you will probably know that Sanderson refused to use Audible for some reason projects because he felt they were taking advantage of indie authors.
In a recent blog post, Sanderson announced the big news that Audible had listened and was taking action.
I felt that the industry was taking advantage of authors because of their lack of powerful corporate interests to advocate for them. While video game creators and musicians get 70–80% (88%, in fact, on two major platforms) of a sale of their products in a digital platform, Audible was paying as low as 25%–with the high end being instead 40%.
Regarding Audible, Brandon Sanderson
Sanderson’s weight in the fantasy book market was substantial enough to bring Audible to the table with an improved offer for indie publishers. He says this is not the 70% he would like but this is a big step forward.
Given Audable’s dominant market share, this news is likely to force other audiobook retailers to treat this renewed offer as the market minimum.
This is good news for us writers. Sanderson could have used his platform as a well-known author to get himself a better deal but he chose to fight for a better deal for everyone.
I think that makes him a hero.
