Platform Building: Experiment with controversial questions

While heated debate too often can be tiring, the occasional question that splits the audience can lead to a lively exchange. Try to think of a few hot button topics that your readers would likely respond well to. Especially if you address the theme or topic in your book(s).

This gives you a chance to craft a blog post that could end up with a high comment count. Lots of comments demonstrate that people are paying attention to you. This signals to other readers that they have arrived at the right place and it signals to agents that you might be an easy author to promote.

Some safe but effective question ideas

  • Tea or coffee?
  • Pinapple on pizza – yes or no
  • What is the correct way around to place the loo paper
  • Milk or water in first?
  • Is a hotdog a sandwich?
  • Is Facebook dead?
  • Marmite – love it or loath it?
