The Player of Games was my first Iain M Banks book. It got me hooked on the Culture as a whole; it was by far the best one. Jernau Morat Gurgeh’s journey was a compelling one but I liked how Banks never shies away from what it cost him, as well as what it gave him.

The game playing went so many levels deeper that’s more obviouse on a second reading.

I read the book first. The movie was good, but the book had more depth, for sure.

As an adaptation, the film was reasonable.

The Man Who Folded Himself was written by David Gerrold. It’s a good story. I enjoyed it.

I’d add Artemis by Andy Weir, which I have recently read and enjoyed.
